About The Artist

Hi There! :)

My name is Karen Zardalian,

I'm a visual artist and an art teacher based in El Gouna, Egypt.

My work is all about bringing the spirit of Egypt to life through brushstrokes. You'll find my pieces are inspired by the raw beauty of ordinary places and Hassan Fathy's enduring philosophy, weaving together memory, emotion, and architecture into scenes that resonate with a universal sense of belonging.

More About Me

What routines or rituals help spark my creativity?

My biggest creative spark comes from my surroundings in El Gouna, Egypt. Since moving here in 2019, my connection to Egypt's architecture, landscapes, and essence has deepened. My routine is simply stepping outside—whether it's a stroll around home, through El Gouna's streets, or exploring Egypt's hidden gems. Discovering subtle beauty in these moments consistently ignites new ideas and perspective.

How did I come to develop my unique artistic style?

My artistic journey began early, thanks to my interior designer dad, architect mom, and painter grandmother. Developing my unique style is a continuous journey of self-discovery, not a destination. The more I paint, the more I learn about myself and how to express my unique artistic voice on canvas.

Are there particular emotions that guide or influence me while painting?

Excitement is a primary emotion that guides me. I often begin a piece without a full plan; the anticipation of seeing it unfold is a powerful motivator, like an adventure without a precise map. My role as an art teacher also provides significant influence. Guiding younger individuals and fostering their creativity gives my own artistic pursuits a deeper purpose.

How do you express the essence of Egypt through my art?

I express Egypt's essence by showcasing its exquisite culture and architecture, from El Gouna's vibrancy to Cairo's bustling beauty. It's a privilege to capture this inherent beauty. Hassan Fathy, "the architect of the poor," is a cornerstone of my inspiration. His philosophy on local materials, traditional techniques, and the human element deeply informs my interpretations of Egyptian spaces.

Is there a project that holds special meaning for me, and why does it stand out?

Every project holds special meaning, but recent commissions of homes have resonated deeply. Clients ask for paintings of their homes to carry with them as they travel or as cherished souvenirs. Capturing the essence of a place filled with memories, and providing that sense of connection and belonging through my art, is incredibly rewarding.
